Introduction
We’re thrilled to share a recent success story from our Arducam Active User (AAU) program! Timo Rantalainen from Finland has successfully implemented synchronized multicamera capture using our Arducam modules, paving the way for innovative applications in markerless motion capture for sports.
Project Overview
Timo’s project aimed to capture synchronized video from multiple cameras, with the shutter controlled by an external trigger. This setup is crucial for accurately tracking motion without markers, especially in sports analytics. After initial discussions, Timo decided to use the Arducam B0240 camera modules, compatible with Raspberry Pi, to achieve his goals.
Communication Process
The journey began when Timo reached out to us with his application. The Arducam team engaged in a detailed conversation to understand Timo’s specific needs. Through collaborative dialogue, Timo clarified that he was interested in the B0477 camera but later confirmed that the B0240 would better suit his requirements.

The Setup
- Camera Selection: Timo chose three B0240 cameras for initial testing, with plans to expand to six if synchronization proved successful.
- Hardware Configuration: Following the Arducam and Raspberry Pi documentation, Timo connected the cameras, ensuring proper synchronization through the XVS pin. He utilized resistors to create a voltage divider, enabling the cameras to communicate effectively.
- Testing Method: To test synchronization, Timo dropped a bouncy ball and used YOLO for tracking. The time series data from the cameras allowed him to evaluate synchronization accuracy.
Results
We are proud to report that Timo’s testing was successful! We are excited to share the test video clip here.
Benefits of Arducam’s Development
Timo’s successful test of genlocked video capture highlights several key benefits for Arducam’s camera development and applications:
- Validation of Synchronization Capabilities: This test confirms that Arducam cameras can achieve precise synchronization, which is essential for applications like motion capture and multi-camera setups in sports and broadcasting.
- Real-World Application Insights: By testing the cameras in a practical scenario, Timo provided valuable feedback on their performance, which can guide future enhancements and feature development.
- Increased Market Appeal: Demonstrating successful synchronization can attract more customers in industries that require high-quality, synchronized video capture, positioning Arducam as a strong competitor in the market.
- Encouragement for Further Innovation: The success of this test may inspire other users to explore innovative applications of Arducam technology, driving demand for new features tailored to specific industry needs.
- Enhanced Collaboration Opportunities: The communication between Timo and Arducam underscores the importance of collaboration in product development, potentially leading to partnerships with research institutions and industry professionals.
Conclusion
Timo’s project exemplifies the innovative applications of our technology in real-world scenarios. The collaborative communication between Timo and our team played a pivotal role in the project’s success, highlighting the importance of support and guidance in achieving ambitious goals.
